Cimatu to create DENR satellite offices in Boracay, other tourist spots

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu has ordered the creation of satellite environment offices in the country鈥檚 tourist spots such as Boracay, to monitor their management.

During the House Committee on Natural Resources hearing on the reported establishment of structures in Boracay on Wednesday, Cimatu revealed that the environment office in the island resort was abolished prior to his tenure.

鈥淔or the information of everybody, there used to be an environment office there, but unfortunately, I don鈥檛 know why, previously, that office was abolished,鈥 Cimatu听said.

Cimatu said the DENR has restored the office and will create other DENR extension offices in the other eco-tourism areas.

鈥淣ot only in Boracay, I will be creating DENR offices right in the heart of all tourist destinations in the country like Siargao in Surigao, Panglao in Bohol, in Palawan and also in Puerto Galera,鈥 he added.

However, some committee members have expressed concern that the DENR鈥檚 budget would not be sufficient to realize Cimatu鈥檚 plan.

鈥淢r. Secretary, P150 million compared to the P50 billion is not sufficient.听 I think you should use your influence to the executive, to the president, and to this congress, to ask for more,鈥 said Rep. Jesulito Manalo, committee chair.

鈥淲e cannot use P150 million, 鈥榶ong building niyo lang magkano na eh.听 鈥榊ong operations ninyo,鈥 he added.

Lawmakers also noted that the government should support the programs of the DENR with regard to the rehabilitation, as it has become a model for future projects.

鈥淚 think this is the model now of success eh.听 We cannot fail here,鈥 Manalo added.听 /muf
