Angono cops apologize for victim blaming anti-rape ‘reminders’

The Angono Municipal Police in Rizal said sorry Thursday over its Facebook post that suggested ways for women to avoid rape.

The apology was made after the municipal police issued a 10-point guidelines on what women should do or how women should behave in order to prevent getting raped, which caused an uproar among netizens and women empowerment advocates.

“Ang Angono Municipal Police Station sa pamumuno ni PSUPT RUBEN M PIQUERO ay taos-pusong humihingi ng paumanhin sa lahat hinggil sa aming FB Post na ‘Paalaala Para Makaiwas sa Rape,’” its said in a Facebook post.

On Tuesday, the Angono Police set out the “reminders” that included “not wearing skimpy clothes” and “not drinking alcohol when out on a date.”

The public criticized the guidelines for its apparent archaic ideas and for ostensibly putting the blame on women for becoming rape victims instead of faulting the offenders.

The Angono Police, however, clarified that its intention was to “remind everyone so that they could avoid being a victim of rape.”

“Sabi nga po, ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’” it noted.

The controversial anti-rape post has been deleted since Wednesday.  /kga
