Police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to assassinate House Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr. after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for governor of Camarines Sur province on Tuesday.
In a statement, Andaya on Wednesday said the supposed gunman, Ray John Musa, was taken into custody by the police after he dropped an unlicensed .38-caliber revolver, which he allegedly tried to use in shooting the outgoing Camarines Sur representative.
Sneaked up from behind
He said Musa 鈥渟neaked up鈥 behind him after he submitted his COC at the local election office inside the capitol building in Pili town.
鈥淚f they think this will make me cower in fear, they are wrong. There鈥檚 no turning back for me,鈥 Andaya said.
He said one of his security aides, Samuel Alforte, and Lupi town Mayor Roberto Matamorosa subdued Musa after the firearm fell on the ground.
Andaya did not identify who could be behind the purported attempt on his life but surmised that Musa was 鈥渁cting on orders of powerful political figures鈥 in the province.
