Cebu jail guard shot dead on his way to escort duty

CEBU CITY – A jail guard at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center was shot dead by two men before dawn Sunday in Cebu City.

Jessie Castañares, 33, was on his way to escort an inmate confined at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center when killed at about 2 a.m.

Senior Insp. Dexter Basirgo, Guadalupe Police Station director, said Castañares was along I. Limkakeng and Happy Valley Streets when the gunmen struck.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“We are looking into personal grudge as the motive,” said Basirgo. /cbb
