KBP issues new rules on kids
MANILA, Philippines—The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) is set to approve new provisions in the KBP Broadcast Code to reinforce current programming standards relating to children.
KBP legal counsel and spokesperson Rudolph Jularbal said the proposed provisions have been submitted to the KBP board of trustees by the Standards Authority, the association’s code enforcement body.
The revisions will be presented to KBP members for approval in June, he said.
Jularbal said the new guidelines have taken into account recommendations of the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (Pana).
Jularbal said Pana focused on three critical concerns involving children in programming: Their exposure to violence; their involvement in situations not appropriate to a child’s age; and the use of offensive language.
He said Pana deemed these concerns starting points for bringing focus on the rights of children in media and for encouraging broadcasters and content providers to take responsibility for their program content.
Article continues after this advertisement“Once the provisions are adopted, the KBP’s self-regulatory process will further assure accountability by broadcasters because the code provides sanctions for violations,” said KBP vice chair Butch Canoy.
KBP chair Herman Basbaño said the association will dialogue with industry stakeholders on putting the new guidelines into effect at the station level.
