Duterte prohibits cops from drinking in public places

MANILA, Philippines 鈥擯resident Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday ordered law enforcers to refrain from drinking in public places, saying that drunk law enforcers tend to be involved in trouble.

鈥淜ayong mga pulis (policemen), I鈥檓 warning you, do not drink in public. Sa Davao pinagbawalan ko 鈥榶an (I banned that in Davao), ngayon (now) all over the Philippines. Do not enter into drinking places,鈥 Duterte said in a speech during the Barangay Summit on Peace and Order at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

The President said the military will also be banned from entering drinking places as law enforcers who are drunk may harm each other during drinking sessions.

鈥淜asi wala kayong ibang gawin pag lasing na, pati army, wag kayong magdala ng baril. Kasi itong army pati pulis isa rin itong mag-agawan ng microphone鈥︹檖ag lasing na, magbarilan na ang mga gago,鈥 he said.

(You won鈥檛 be able to do anything if you are already drunk. So the Army is included. Don鈥檛 bring guns. These Army men and policemen shoot each other when they get drunk.)

The President issued the order after he claimed that he beat up on Monday a soldier and a police officer for shooting each other.

鈥淜ahapon may nagbarilan na (pulis at) army sinuntok ko silang dalawa sa ospital鈥 sabi ko sa doctor labas ka muna, binugbog ko 鈥榶ung dalawa letse kayo (Yesterday, I punched a soldier an police officer at the hospital for shooting each other. I told the doctor to get out and I punched those two),鈥 he said.

Recently, Duterte also ordered police officers to stay out of casinos, singling out Okada Manila in Para帽aque City, which he described as a place 鈥渃rawling with usurers and kidnappers.鈥 /ee
