Kyrgyz inmates on hunger strike over prostitute ban

BISHKEK鈥擨nmates at several prisons in Kyrgyzstan have launched a hunger strike over new restrictions barring them from being visited by prostitutes, a state official said Tuesday.

鈥淧risoners at seven prisons have refused to take their meals,鈥 said Joldochbek Bouzourmankoulov, spokesman for the country鈥檚 prison sentencing agency.

He said the protest was tied to new limits on prisoner visits.

鈥淧risoners had the right for visits from their families and 鈥榦ther鈥 people,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut under the label for 鈥榦thers,鈥 they were bringing prostitutes to the prison.鈥

From now on, only relatives with identity cards showing their ties to inmates can visit.
