After Bikoy’s visit, IBP says it remains independent

MANILA, Philippines — The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-National on Tuesday maintained that it remains independent after its Davao chapter said that the appearance of Peter Joemel Advincula claiming to be “Bikoy” at its main office “reeked of political agenda.”

In a statement, its IBP’s Board of Governors said Advincula is not in IBPs custody.

“The IBP leadership is unaware of his current whereabouts,” the IBP’s statement read.

The IBP national leadership explained that Advincula arrived at its main office in Ortigas seeking legal assistance from its National Center for Legal Aid (NCLA).

“Like any other applicant for legal assistance, he is subject to the evaluation process. Right now, his application for legal aid is still under evaluation by the NCLA,” the IBP said, adding that it did not invite the media or crafted Advincula’s statement.

“The IBP continues to be the sentinel of the rule of law, in line with its mandate to maintain independence and credibility as the umbrella organization of all lawyers in the Philippines,” the IBP added. /ee
