MANILA, Philippines— “Thank you” was all Senator Imee Marcos could say to Kris Aquino’s willingness to meet “halfway” with the Marcoses.

It all started when the senator wore a yellow gown during the President’s State of the Nation Address last Monday. Yellow is associated with the Aquinos.

“Move forward, magkaisa ulit,” Marcos then said when asked the message behind her choice of yellow gown.

Sought to comment on Aquino’s statement, the senator said: “Salamat at dapat bukas loob tayo sa lahat.”

Marcos though refused to comment on Aquino’s remark that moving forward can be done only by acknowledging the past.

“Basta, salamat and I think that’s a good start,” the senator said.

The decades’ long rift between the two families could be traced back to the assassination of Aquino’s’ father, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch critic of Marcos’ father, in August 1983.

Three years after, Ferdinand Marcos was ousted in power by a people power revolt that later catapulted Kris’ mother, the late former President Cory Aquino, into the presidency.
