A homeowner鈥檚 toilet exploded after lightning struck her home鈥檚 septic tank during a thunderstorm in Florida, United States, last Sunday, Aug. 4.
MaryLou Ward, who was relaxing with her husband and three dogs, was roused out of bed when they heard a loud noise, NBC-affiliate WFLA-TV reported on Monday, Aug. 5. Ward discovered that her toilet has exploded to pieces when she went inside the master鈥檚 bathroom.
鈥淚t was the loudest noise I鈥檝e ever heard it just went BOOM,鈥 Ward was quoted as saying. 鈥淲e got out of bed and came over here, and the toilet was laying on the floor.鈥
Ward sought the help of a plumbing service, A-1 Affordable Plumbing Inc., to determine the cause of the incident. It turns out that lightning struck the septic tank of Ward鈥檚 home which caused her toilet to explode, as per the plumbing company鈥檚 Facebook post on the same day.
鈥淸Lightning] struck this [homeowner鈥檚] septic tank, igniting the methane gas (natural gas from sewer) in the sewer pipes and causing an explosion,鈥 the company said. 鈥淭he toilet exploded in [the homeowner鈥檚] master bathroom sending porcelain airborne like a missile (the porcelain penetrated into wall). [Luckily] no one was hurt!鈥
According to the plumbing company, Ward鈥檚 sewer pipes and septic tank have to be replaced. A camera inspection will be scheduled 鈥渢his week to see how much sanitary pipe needs to be replaced.鈥 Hannah Mallorca/JB
