Ten foreigners allegedly working as entertainers at a club in Manila without the necessary documents were arrested on Wednesday night.
Police Maj. Rosalino Ibay Jr., chief of the Manila Police District鈥檚 (MPD) Special Mayor鈥檚 Reaction Team (SMaRT), said they arrested the women during an inspection of Sha-Sha Club on San Andres and Adriatico Streets.
They were identified as Russians Eketerina Golubeva, 27; Polina Tagunova, 26; Ana Mozharevskaya, 24; Anastasia Bakumenko, 23; Aleksandra Ivanova, 29; Zukhra Akhmedzianova, 21; Diana Razogreeva, 21; Anna Nikitina, 27 and Alexandra Zivittinish, 21, and Kazakh Ussipbek Kymbat, 24 from Kazakhstan.
Based on the information given to SMaRT, the Bureau of Immigration issued special permits to the suspects that allowed them to work. The permits, however, expired in November 2018.
Uncooperative
The suspects were uncooperative, said Ibay, and had refused to present their passports.
They are currently detained at the SMaRT office in city hall with charges of violating the 2013 Omnibus Revenue Code of the City of Manila being prepared against them.
The SMaRT police team also served on Thursday afternoon聽 a closure order against Sha-Sha VIP Club, reportedly owned by a Filipino businessman Reynaldo Vergara, for failing to comply with city regulations.
In an interview, Police Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao, the MPD director, said they were investigating if the arrested women were victims of human trafficking.
He added that the MPD had聽 had gotten information about violations being committed by entertainment establishments.
鈥淲e have been receiving intelligence reports that there are some clubs with so many violations. [It鈥檚 not] because they have [foreign workers] but because of violations like [they have] no business permits which is a very essential document that every establishment should have. They should also have working papers for their workers,鈥� Danao said.
