Number of freed convicts who surrendered climbs to 45 – PNP

MANILA, Philippines — The number of freed convicts who surrendered to police stations nationwide has climbed to 45 as of Saturday, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PNP reported this morning that around 36 convicts surrendered but nine more yielded to police as of 5 p.m.

President Rodrigo Duterte previously ordered the freed convicts to surrender to verify if they had been erroneously given an early release under the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law.

According to recent data from the PNP, Cagayan Valley has the highest number of convicts who surrendered with 24; followed by seven in Central Visayas; four in the Caraga Region; two each in the Bicol Region, Western Visayas and Metro Manila; and one each in Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Eastern Visayas, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

The PNP also reported that of those who surrendered, 17 were convicted of rape; 14 of murder; four of robbery with homicide; two of drug cases; three of robbery with rape; one of robbery with murder; one of murder homicide, one of double frustrated murder and grave threats; one of attempted rape with homicide; and one of parricide.
