Umbrellas in planes policy eased
MANILA, Philippines — Passengers flying out of the country can now stow their foldable umbrellas either in their hand-carry bags or checked-in luggage. Cane umbrellas, however, are still banned in cabin bags.
The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) has eased its policy on the bringing of umbrellas into airplanes due to public clamor, according to a statement released on Sunday.
“During the lengthy discussion on Oct. 8, the OTS [decided], in consensus with the Airlines Operators Council and airport authorities, to hear the voices of the public and provide corrective action to allow folded umbrellas in both carry-on and [checked-in] baggage, while maintaining [the ban on] cane umbrellas … for carry-on [bags],” it said.
Under previous OTS memorandum circulars released this year, umbrellas were not allowed in carry-on or cabin baggage as these were objects with sharp points or edges.
In an August report, more than 100 umbrellas were seized from passengers at the Iloilo International Airport.
