WATCH: Dog on leash escapes strangulation with help from good Samaritan

A good Samaritan prevented a tragedy from happening when he quickly saved a dog whose leash got stuck between elevator doors, separating it from its owner.

A certain Johnny Mathis, from Texas, United States exited the said elevator before a woman and her pet entered it. However, the doors had closed in on the animal鈥檚 leash before it could join its owner, as seen in a video on Mathis鈥 Twitter page on Dec. 10.

Mathis, who was looking at the dog as he was walking away, did not hesitate when he saw the animal鈥檚 leash rising with the elevator. He immediately put himself between the dog and the elevator, before successfully freeing the dog from its leash.

鈥淸The owner] started screaming as soon as the door shut and was bawling her eyes out when it came back down,鈥 Mathis pointed out after the incident. 鈥淪he thought the worst. [P]oor things.鈥

Mathis鈥 heroic act quickly went viral on Twitter with over 21 million views and over 35,000 retweets.

鈥淭his could have been a lot worse but thankfully I could help,鈥 he said in a separate post on Dec. 12. 鈥淚鈥檓 glad it ended the way it did, truly.鈥

鈥淎ll this attention wasn鈥檛 my intention but I hope awareness to situations like this are brought to everyone鈥檚 [notice],鈥 he appealed. 鈥淚t could happen to anyone. A second is all it takes.鈥 JB
