New Yorkers usually clap, bang pots and pans, or simply cry 鈥渢hank you鈥� out of their windows every evening at 7 p.m., honoring the healthcare workers risking their lives on the frontlines of the battle against the coronavirus.
But the evening鈥檚 ritual does vary. On Thursday, a volunteer choir called 鈥淧eace of the Heart鈥� led thousands singing 鈥淣ew York, New York,鈥� the beloved song made famous by Frank Sinatra.
That classic echoed across neighborhoods for roughly 10 minutes, coming out of windows and balconies, according to people posting on Facebook and other social media.
鈥淚t鈥檚 iconic, it鈥檚 New York,鈥� said Robert Hornsby, shout out director of 鈥淧eace of Heart鈥� about why they picked the song, 鈥渁nd it has a great message about getting out of it.鈥�
He added: 鈥淚t is beloved, it is well known, and if you just don鈥檛 know the words, you can just repeat the parts you do know.鈥�
Streamed through the choir鈥檚 Facebook page, New Yorkers could sing along or simply play the music out of their windows and from their balconies.
Vivian Young, who lives on First Avenue with her husband and two children, said from behind a mask that the everyday tribute to nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals improves morale.
鈥淚t鈥檚 something you look forward to at the end of the day, instead of watching all the bad news,鈥� she added.
Her husband, Mark, 49, said he hoped America鈥檚 economic capital had turned a corner, citing the latest death figures and declining hospital admissions.
鈥淚 think you are going to see the markets rebound. People will want to be outside. They will fight to get a table at restaurants,鈥� he said. 鈥淗opefully, I am right.鈥�
Yet, the ritual will continue for now. Although COVID-19 appears to have stabilized in the state鈥攁fter more than 213,000 infections and over 11,500 deaths鈥攇overnor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday he would prolong confinement measures in place across New York City for another month. CL /ra
