4 OFWs who returned to Cebu test positive for COVID-19

CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines  — Four more overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who arrived in Cebu via so-called mercy voyages tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday, May 2.

This brings the total number of infected repatriated OFWs to 18.

These OFWs tested negative in the rapid antibody test in Manila on April 26 before they were allowed to sail back to their home provinces.

Last April, 27, 220 Cebuano OFWs arrived here and were subjected to swab tests and a 14-day quarantine at various hotels in Cebu City.

Authorities assured that there was no interaction between the OFWs and Cebu residents because of the isolation procedures.

In her daily press conference, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia announced the additional 124 cases in the entire island, most of which were in Cebu City.

The entire Cebu now has a total of 968 COVID-19 cases, excluding the 18 OFWs who were not included in the tally.

As of May 2, Cebu City continued to bear the brunt of the COVID-19 infections with 879 cases, followed by Lapu-Lapu City with 35, the rest of Cebu province with 28, and Mandaue City with 26.
