Driver flees, caught after his SUV kills girl on Quezon highway

LUCENA CITY—A three-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by a speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV) on the Quirino Highway in the town of Tagkawayan, Quezon province on Tuesday (June 2), according to police.

In a report on Wednesday (June 3), the Tagkawayan police said three-year-old Yolanda Lazona was hit by a Toyota RAV 4 being driven by a Jericksm Jay Mendoza at the village of Rizal around 5:30 p.m.

Rescuers rushed the child to Maria L. Eleazar Memorial District Hospital in the town proper but the girl died on the way.

Police cited witnesses as saying the girl “suddenly run across the road” when she was hit by the SUV.

The driver, Mendoza, fled but was caught by police in the town of Sipocot, Camarines Sur province some 40 minutes after his SUV hit the girl.

Sipocot policemen turned over Mendoza to authorities in Tagkawayan.
