NBI probes death of police doctor

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation is conducting its own parallel investigation of the death of a police doctor who died after allegedly being exposed to a toxic disinfectant. Dr. Casey Gutierrez, 31, a physician with the rank of police captain, died on May 31 while confined at the Lung Center of the Philippines due to chemical inhalation injuries.

Last May 24, he got sprayed with a toxic decontamination solution after attending to a patient at the Philippine Sports Arena treatment and monitoring facility.

Two other policemen were exposed to the same substance and were treated at a police hospital.

The Department of Health will lead an independent probe into Gutierrez’s death.
