Bishop: Bataan residents oppose nuclear plant

/ 04:31 AM October 06, 2020

A bishop from Bataan is confident the people would oppose the revival of the mothballed Bataan nuclear power plant (BNPP) due to safety concerns. Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga on Sunday said this was in response to President Duterte’s call for dialogue with Bataan residents regarding the government’s plan to revive the plant. As quoted by CBCP, the official news arm of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, Santos said the diocese and the officials of Bataan were united against the nuclear power plant rehabilitation plans. “The voice of our people is strongly, openly no,” he said. Santos said the amount of damage that a potential nuclear accident could cause “heavily outweighs its benefits.” —Jodee A. Agoncillo
