2 workers dead, 2 injured as excavation site collapses in Legazpi City

LEGAZPI CITY—Two workers died and two were injured when part of an excavation site for a private construction project at a village here gave way on Tuesday (Dec. 15).

Allan Madrona Andes and Rolin Bagacay, both workers of El Acebuchi Builders (ELAB), died while being taken by police to the Legazpi City Hospital after debris from the excavation site, on a steep mountain slope at the village of Pinaric, fell on them past 2 p.m., according to Ladee Azur, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management chief.

The remains of the two construction workers were kept at the Legazpi City Hospital morgue waiting to be claimed by their families as of early Tuesday evening.

Two other workersA—riel Lola Marcelo, 40, from Pilar, Sorsogon, and Marvin Baldediano, from the village of Taysan here—were extracted from the debris and brought to the Bicol Regional Teaching and Training Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Azur, in a phone interview, said the construction firm was said to have no excavation permit from the City Engineering Office. The workers were part of a team that was constructing a building in the area.
