MANILA, Philippines — The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Batangas and nearby areas on Friday, Christmas Day, is not likely to trigger a tsunami because of its depth, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

“Iyong lindol kanina 7:43 nang umaga, may magnitude 6.3. Ito pero ito ay malalim mga 74 kilometers. Ito ang initial paremeters, so mamaya magbabago ng kaunti pero ito po ay nasa may Calatagan, Batangas. Pero dahil sa lalim niyan wala po dapat ipangamba na tsunami,” Renato Solidum, the chief state seismologist, said in an interview with dzBB.

(The earthquake which was felt this 7:43 in the morning has a magnitude of 6.3. This has a depth of 74 kilometers. This is only the initial parameters so later it may change later but it is located in Calatagan, Batangas. But because of its depth we don’t have to worry about a tsunami.)
