Moderately strong aftershock follows Mindanao quake; no tsunami risk

MANILA, Philippines — A series of aftershocks struck Davao Occidental after midnight Friday following a magnitude 7.1 quake that shook a large part of Mindanao Thursday night.

In its bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake that occurred at 12:37 AM of Friday some 232 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, its epicenter.

The tremblors are of tectonic origin, Phivolcs said.

In all, there had been a total of 13 aftershocks as of posting time, with magnitude from a low of 2.8 to 4.2, which has been categorized as “moderately strong” by Phivolcs.

Meanwhile, a tsunami was not expected following the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
