BORONGAN CITY –– A committee of the House of Representatives has approved a resolution seeking to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Philippines’ involvement in the first circumnavigation of the world on the island of Homonhon on March 16, 1521.
House Resolution No. 1403, authored by Eastern Samar Rep. Maria Fe Abunda, got the nod of the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture chaired by Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo.
Abunda hoped that the people would recognize and remember a crucial part of the country’s history.
It was on the island of Samar, particularly Homonhon, where the country’s first Easter Mass, attended by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his Spanish companions, took place.
