Claro M. Recto, known as the “Father of the Philippine Constitution,” was born on Feb. 8, 1890. He was president of the 1934 constitutional convention which drafted the 1935 Philippine Constitution. A former associate justice of the Supreme Court, he ran for the Senate in 1941 and garnered the highest number of votes among the 24 elected senators. After his death on Oct. 2, 1960, Calle Azcarraga in Manila was renamed Claro M. Recto Avenue in 1961.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
