Duterte declares state of calamity due to African swine fever

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has declared a state of calamity nationwide due to African swine fever until the end of the year, Malacañang said Tuesday.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said President Duterte has signed Proclamation No. 1143, which declares a state of calamity until the end of the year “unless earlier lifted as circumstances may warrant.”

“Ang Pilipinas ay nasa ilalim ng dahil sa South African Swine Fever outbreak. Nilagdaan kahapon ang Proclamation No. 1143,” Roque announced in a Palace briefing.

“All government agencies and LGUs are enjoined to render full assistance to and cooperation with each other and mobilize the necessary resources to undertake critical, urgent, and appropriate measures in a timely manner to curtail the further spread of ASF, address the supply deficit in pork products, reduce retail prices, and jumpstart and the rehabilitation of the local hog industry,” Roque said, quoting the order.
