JAKARTA More than 350 doctors and medical听飞辞谤办别谤蝉听have caught听颁翱痴滨顿19听in Indonesia despite being听惫补肠肠颈苍补迟别诲听with Sinovac and听诲辞锄别苍蝉听have been听丑辞蝉辫颈迟补濒ized, officials said, as concerns grow about the efficacy of some vaccines against more infectious variants.

Most of the听飞辞谤办别谤蝉听were asymptomatic and self-isolating at home, said Badai Ismoyo, head of the听丑别补濒迟丑听office in the district of Kudus in central Java, but听诲辞锄别苍蝉听were in the hospital聽with high fevers and declining oxygen saturation levels.

Kudus, which has about 5,000听丑别补濒迟丑care听飞辞谤办别谤蝉, is battling an outbreak believed to be driven by the more transmissible Delta variant which has pushed up its bed occupancy rates above 90%.

Designated as a priority group,听丑别补濒迟丑care听飞辞谤办别谤蝉听were among the first to be听惫补肠肠颈苍补迟别诲听when inoculations began in January.

Almost all have received the听颁翱痴滨顿19听vaccine developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac, the听滨苍诲辞苍别蝉颈补苍听Medical Association (IDI) says.

While the number of听滨苍诲辞苍别蝉颈补苍听healthcare听飞辞谤办别谤蝉听dying from听颁翱痴滨顿19听has dropped sharply from 158 in January to 13 in May, according to data initiative group LaporCOVID19, public听丑别补濒迟丑听experts say the Java hospitalizations聽are cause for concern.

鈥淭he data shows they have the Delta variant (in Kudus) so it is no surprise that the breakthrough infection is higher than before, because, as we know, the majority of听丑别补濒迟丑care听飞辞谤办别谤蝉听in Indonesia got Sinovac, and we still don鈥檛 know yet how effective it is in the real world against the Delta variant,鈥 said Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist at Australia鈥檚 Griffith University.

Spokespersons from Sinovac and Indonesia鈥檚 ministry of听丑别补濒迟丑听were not immediately available for comment on the efficacy of the Chinese firm鈥檚 CoronaVac against newer variants of the virus.

The World听贬别补濒迟丑听Organization (WHO) approved emergency use of Sinovac鈥檚 vaccine this month, saying results showed it prevented symptomatic disease in 51% of recipients and prevented severe听颁翱痴滨顿19听and听丑辞蝉辫颈迟补濒聽stays in all of those studied.

As Indonesia grappled with one of Asia鈥檚 worst outbreaks, registering more than 1.9 million infections and 53,000 deaths, its doctors and nurses suffered a heavy toll of 946 deaths.

Many are now experiencing pandemic fatigue and taking a less vigilant approach to听丑别补濒迟丑听protocols after being听惫补肠肠颈苍补迟别诲, said Lenny Ekawati, from LaporCOVID19.

鈥淭hat phenomenon happens quite often these days, not only within the community but also听丑别补濒迟丑care听飞辞谤办别谤蝉,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey think because they are听惫补肠肠颈苍补迟别诲听that they are safe.鈥

But as more cases of the highly transmissible Delta variant are identified in the world鈥檚 fourth most populous nation, the data is starting to tell a different story.

Across Indonesia, at least five doctors and one nurse have died from听颁翱痴滨顿19听despite being听惫补肠肠颈苍补迟别诲, according to the data initiative group, although one had only received a first shot.

In Kudus, one senior doctor has died, said IDI, although it is understood he had a co-morbidity.

In Jakarta, the capital, radiologist Dr Prijo Sidipratomo told Reuters he knew of at least half a dozen doctors who had been听丑辞蝉辫颈迟补濒ized with听颁翱痴滨顿19听in the past month, despite being听惫补肠肠颈苍补迟别诲, with one now being treated in an ICU.

鈥淚t is alarming for us because we cannot rely on vaccinations only,鈥 he said, urging people to take precautions.

Weeks after the Muslim Eid Al-Fitr holidays, Indonesia has experienced a surge in cases, with the positivity rate exceeding 23% on Wednesday and daily cases nearing 10,000, its highest since late February.

In its latest report, the WHO urged Indonesia to tighten its lockdown as increased transmission due to variants of concern and a surge in bed occupancy rates demanded urgent action.
