BOC seizes P10-M worth of smuggled onions

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs-Manila International Container Port (BOC-MICP) seized smuggled onions valued at P10 million.

The smuggled onions, which were misdeclared as ice cream, were seized on June 28, the BOC reported Wednesday.

The BOC said the smuggled onions originated in China and were found to be consigned to E. Austero Merchandising.

The BOC said a warrant of seizure and detention was issued against the shipment for violating Republic Act No. 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

In a statement, MICP District Collector Romeo Allan R. Rosales said that they will remain committed to preventing the entry of illegal goods into the country, including agricultural products that do not have necessary permits to ensure the safety of all items. — Sofia Vertucio, trainee
