Social media overflow with tributes to soldiers dead in C-130 crash

MANILA, Philippines—Friends and families of soldiers who died in the C-130 crash in Sulu province are taking to social media to express grief and are receiving tributes there, too.

The soldiers’ loved ones spent moments to remember them and the sacrifice they made. Those who died had different personalities, backgrounds and dreams. The accident abruptly ended those dreams.

Most of the public posts for the dead soldiers were intimate, personalized obituaries.

The July 4 plane crash in Sulu, the country’s worst military aircraft disaster in recent history, killed a total of 52 people—49 of the 96 passengers on board and three local residents.

Only 19 out of the 49 had been identified so far as most of the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
