MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Fabian has intensified into a severe tropical storm but no storm warning signals have so far been raised, the state weather bureau said midday Monday.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Servoces Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Chris Perez said Fabian was located 1,055 kilometers east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, or too far to affect the Philippine landmass.
Fabian has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, gusts of up to 115 kph and moving west northwest at 15 kph, Pagasa said in its latest weather bulletin.
With its current track, it is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday morning.
But residents and concerned agencies and officials in Batanes and Babuyan Islands were advised to continuously monitor the tropical cyclone because it would remain close to PAR when it heads to China.
Pagasa is also tracking a tropical depression outside PAR. It was spotted 840 kilometers west northwest of Northern Luzon.
The two tropical cyclones would enhance the southwest monsoon. Rains are expected over Metro Manila and parts of Luzon.
Moderate to rough seas may be experienced over the western seaboard of Palawan including Kalayaan Group of Islands.
