A security guard in Manila has surrendered to authorities after fatally shooting a man who reportedly tried to attack him with an icepick.

MANILA, Philippines — A security guard in Manila has surrendered to authorities after fatally shooting a man who reportedly tried to attack him with an ice pick, the Manila Police District (MPD) reported on Tuesday.

The shooter was identified as Jason Lacana, 40, a security guard at Gordi Plaza Ladies Dormtel in Legarda Street, while the attacker remains unidentified. He was believed to be around 20-25 years old and 5’3″ in stature.

Initial investigation revealed that Lacana, while on duty in the said dormitory on Monday, was under attack by the man who was armed with an ice pick. The man reportedly shouting invectives at the security guard during the attack.

“He immediately threw a wooden chair to prevent the latter from attacking him but to no avail,” the MPD said in a report.

“Sensing danger, he immediately pulled out his service pistol and shot the suspect once on his body that caused his instantaneous death,” police report added.

Afterwards, Lacaba surrendered to the responding policemen from Barbosa Police Station, and is now currently detained at MPD custodial facility while investigation of the incident is ongoing.
