Lawyer slain in South Cotabato gun attack

KORONADAL CITY—Unidentified men shot dead a lawyer Wednesday afternoon in Surallah town, South Cotabato.

Surallah Mayor Antonio Bendita identified the victim as lawyer Juan Macababad.

Initial report said two men riding tandem on a motorbike arrived in front of Macababad’s residence in Barangay Poblacion at past 5 p.m. and called for the lawyer.

As the 60-year-old Macababad was opening the gate of his compound, he was shot in the head and body.

The gunmen quickly fled.

Responding neighbors rushed Macababad to the Javelosa Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lawyer Remegio Roxas, president of the South Cotabato/General Santos City chapter of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, condemned the killing of Macababad.

Roxas and fellow lawyers in the province have urged the police to dig deeper into the attack and give justice to Macababad.

Police are still determining the motive of the attack.
