MANILA, Philippines — Nikkei Asia’s latest COVID-19 Recovery Index ranks the Philippines last in infection control, vaccination and mobility.

Tokyo-based financial magazine’s latest index lists the Philippines as the last country out of 121.

The index measures the following factors, with each subcategory worth 10 points for a total of 90:

The country only scored a measly 30.5 at last, with Malta leading the list with a score of 73.

The top five countries are as follows: Malta, with a score of 73; Chile, 72; Bahrain, 72; United Arab Emirates, 71; Saudi Arabia, 70.

Meanwhile, Vietnam, the nation that scored the lowest in the previous two rankings, received a full score of 10 in the “new vaccines” subcategory, said Nikkei, which places it among the top 10 percent of countries administering vaccine doses daily.

Vietnam is currently placed at 114, with a score of 33.

Apart from the Philippines and Vietnam, other member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) were also ranked lowest. However, Nikkei noted that some improved their ranking due to their vaccination efforts and a decrease in COVID-19 cases: Malaysia’s ranking increased from 115th to 102nd and Indonesia went up from 92nd to 54th.

This recovery report came after Bloomberg’s COVID Resilience Ranking report on Sept. 29, where the Philippines also ranked last among 53 countries in a study that measures economies’ resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic.
