NTC orders telcos to warn subscribers against spam texts

MANILA, Philippines — In response to the surge of spam messages advertising fake jobs, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has ordered all telecommunications companies to send out text messages warning subscribers against the scheme.

In a memorandum dated Nov. 19 addressing telcos Digitel Mobile, Smart, Globe, and DITO, the NTC ordered a “text blast” to be sent out with the following proposed warning:

“BABALA! Huwag maniwala sa text na diumano’y nag-aalok ng trabaho. Huwag po magbigay ng personal na impormasyon. Ito po ay isang scam.”

“In the interest of service, you are hereby directed to text blast to your subscribers the following proposed text with the National Telecommunications Commission as sender,” said the NTC in the memorandum.

The NTC then required all telcos to submit a report of compliance by Dec. 14, 2021.

Meanwhile, an official of the NPC earlier said that international syndicates orchestrated the scam.
