MANILA, Philippines — Forty-three percent of the country’s 37,154 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday were logged in the National Capital Region (NCR), independent analytics group OCTA Research said on Monday, citing data from the Department of Health (DOH).

“15,959 in the NCR today, as predicted (16k). This is 43% of national numbers. Note that this is lower than the past 4 days,” OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David posted on Twitter late Sunday.

In a separate Twitter post early Monday, David said that data also extracted from the DOH, showed that Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, and Bulacan—Metro Manila’s neighboring provinces—trailed NCR with the following new infections:

Cavite – 3,139 new COVID-19 cases

Based on the random antigen tests conducted by the Department of Transportation, David on Sunday projected that Metro Manila’s COVID-19 cases could be six to 15 times higher than the official numbers released by the DOH.

“This means that the actual number of cases, which include asymptomatic and symptomatic cases not tested, and those tested with antigen but not reported, could be 6 to 15 times higher than the official numbers reported by DOH, within a 95% confidence interval,” he explained.
