13 volcanic quakes recorded in the last 24 hours as Taal Volcano rumbles on — Phivolcs

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported last Monday that hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake caused the plumes, which reached a kilometer high before drifting toward the west-northwest direction. 📷:Niño Jesus Orbeta/Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines — Thirteen volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday.

Phivolcs said that the quakes included a volcanic tremor that lasted for three minutes.

“Sa nakalipas na 24 oras, ang Taal Volcano Network ay nakapagtala ng labing-tatlong (13) volcanic earthquakes, kabilang ang isang (1) volcanic tremor na tumagal ng tatlong (3) minuto at patuloy ang low-level background tremor na naitala simula noong ika-7 ng Hulyo 2021,” the agency said on its bulletin.

(In the past 24 hours, the Taal Volcano Network recorded 13 volcanic earthquakes, including one volcanic tremor that spanned for three minutes and the low-level background tremor which has continued since July 7, 2021.)

Phivolcs also noted that there was an upwelling of volcanic gas in the main crater’s lake which produced 1,000-meter high plumes.

Phivolcs added that 4,829 tons of sulfur dioxide were released.

Based on Phivolcs’ monitoring, there is a deflation of the Taal Volcano Island and Taal Caldera.

Alert Level 2 is still up over Taal Volcano which means steam-driven or phreatic bursts or earthquakes may occur in the vicinity of the Taal Volcano Island.

Phivolcs reminded the public that entry in the Taal Volcano Island, which is a permanent danger zone, is prohibited.
