No tsunami threat after strong quake in New Zealand

MANILA, Philippines — There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand on Wednesday night, the   (Phivolcs) said.

In its advisory, Phivolcs said the quake occurred at 8:52 p.m. on Wednesday at a depth of 34 kilometers.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” it said.

“This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs added.

No action has to be undertaken in relation to the earthquake, Phivolcs said.
