ILOILO CITY—Retired Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo died at 8:30 a.m. Friday due to an illness, the Jaro Archdiocese announced.

He was 81.

Lagdameo served two terms from December 2005 to 2009 as president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, according to the CBCP ºÚÁÏÉç.

The soft-spoken but outspoken prelate stood against corruption, the pork barrel, and human rights violations and was a firm advocate of the environment.

He was appointed on March 11, 2000, archbishop of Jaro Archdiocese, one of the biggest and most prestigious dioceses in the Philippines. He retired in 2018, two years after reaching the mandatory age of retirement.
