DepEd to ask P800B budget for 2023

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) will propose a budget of P800 billion for 2023, an official said Tuesday.

DepEd Undersecretary Epimaco Densing said a big chunk of the proposed budget would go to teachers’ compensation.

“Ang hinihingi natin for 2023 is P800 billion pero ito’y pag-uusapan pa together with the Department of Budget and Management. Hopefully, makuha natin ‘yung buong budget,” he said in a press briefing.

“Ang malaking portion pa rin ng budget ay mabigyan ng tamang kompensasyon ‘yung ating mga guro. The bulk of the budget is really still on spending for our teachers,” he added.

Under the leadership of Vice President Sara Duterte as DepEd chief, Densing said the department’s track would focus on improving learner standards, quality education, and teaching standards.

“The major investment should be ensuring that our learners improve their standards, quality education is key and part of this is really to also improve the teaching standards or investing in the training in upgrading the standards of our teaching personnel specifically our teachers,” he said.

“Hopefully we improve the quality of our education, accessibility to everybody, and resiliency to ensure that strong educational standards and we want to make sure that we have quality students who will graduate from our basic education,” Densing added.
