Two inmates die, eight in hospital due to amoebiasis in Kidapawan

KIDAPAWAN CITY — Two inmates of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) here died while eight others were hospitalized due to amoebiasis, an intestinal illness.

Chief Jail Inspector Teddy Uchi, warden of city jail here said the inmates complained of stomach aches and loose bowel movements last week. Their ailments worsened this week, prompting the jail management to bring them to the nearby Kidapawan City Hospital.

Uchi said they did n0t suspect that the ailment was due to their food and water since the sickness was only noted in the cell that contained at least 35 persons.

“I am suspecting that the ailment was due to contaminated foods brought by the family of the inmates when they visited our facility,” Uchi explained.

The remaining inmates confined at the city hospital were transferred to the isolation facility of the city government in Barangay Nuangan, to be given focused attention in treatment, Uchi said

The BJMP also submitted water samples for additional micro-bacterial analysis, which will be conducted by the Metro Kidapawan Water District, (MKWD).

The Kidapawan City Jail has more than 300 inmates.
