No more lockdowns despite rising COVID cases, Marcos vows

MANILA, Philippines — There will be no more lockdowns imposed despite the increase in COVID-19 infections, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. pledged on Monday during his first State of the Nation Address (Sona).

“For our health situation, the threat of COVID-19 is still there, especially now that variants are being discovered. But we cannot afford another lockdown,” Marcos said, speaking in Filipino. “We will not implement another lockdown. We have to balance our health and the welfare of our citizens at one end and the economy on the other.”

However, Marcos told the public that the COVID-19 alert level would still remain.

The president assured the public that different government agencies were working together to contain COVID-19 infections.

He also noted that vaccine booster rollouts were ongoing for an added layer of protection against the coronavirus.

Marcos further planned to establish a Philippine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and a vaccine institute.
