Abra earthquake aftershocks now at 2,108 – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 2,108 aftershocks caused by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that hit the province of Abra, have been recorded by the (Phivolcs) since Wednesday, July 27, up to Monday, Aug. 1.

Of those aftershocks, 707 were plotted, while 55 were recorded as of 7:00 a.m., according to Phivolcs.

As defined by Phivolcs, plotted means the seismic event was located by three or more earthquake monitoring stations, while recorded means at least one station detected the event.

Phivolcs said the aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 1.4 to 5.1.

The agency earlier warned that aftershocks might occur for several days and even up to months, after classifying the magnitude 7 quake in Abra as a “major earthquake.”

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that almost 400,000 individuals had been affected by the earthquake that caused over P700 million worth of damage to infrastructure.
