Red lightning alert suspends Naia flight, ground operations

MANILA, Philippines — Flight and ground operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) were temporarily suspended by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Sunday afternoon following a lightning alert.

The MIAA in an advisory, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a Lightning Red Alert at 2:46 p.m.

“Flight and ground operations at the Naia are suspended. The alert is a safety measure taken to prevent untoward incidents from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passengers and even flight operations,” said MIAA.

Pagasa’s weather forecast for Sunday indicated that a low pressure area and the southwest monsoon will bring rain in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Flight and ground operations were resumed at 4:08 p.m. after Pagasa lowered the lightning alert to Yellow status.
