10 alleged communist terrorists surrender, PNP reports

The Communist Party of the Philippines on Thursday welcomed the decision of a Manila court denying the government's bid to tag them as "terrorists."

MANILA, Philippines — Ten alleged members of the Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army – Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) have surrendered, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Monday.

According to the PNP, the alleged members surrendered to the National Capital Region Police Office on Wednesday morning, the 50th anniversary of the martial law declaration.

“Tulong-tulong tayo para sa pangmatagalang kapayapaan (Let us help one another to achieve long-lasting peace)… This is a major milestone in our quest to end violence amidst our anti-insurgency campaign,” PNP Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said in a statement.

“Now that they have denounced lawlessness and brought themselves into the light of peace, we now call on other rebels to follow suit and start building a better future for the nation,” Azurin went on.

In addition to raising the white flag, the alleged rebels laid down weapons as a show of their commitment to advancing enduring peace, the PNP noted.

The supposed rebels voluntarily surrendered powered firearms and explosives such as one 5.56 rifle with six short magazines and 122 rounds of 5.56 ammunitions; 4 rounds of 40mm grenade launchers; one improvised shotgun with 18 rounds of 12 gauge shotgun ammo; two shotguns with 36 rounds of 12 gauge shotgun ammo; and two 38 caliber revolver with 2 ammo. –Kristelle Razon, Inquirer.net trainee
