Coming soon: New sanitary landfill in Ligao City, Albay
LIGAO CITY – A new sanitary landfill will be built in this city in compliance with Republic Act 9003 or the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.”
On Friday, Sept. 30, the city government here signed a memorandum of agreement with Bicol University’s College of Engineering, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) regarding the construction of the landfill.
Mayor Fernando Gonzalez told the Inquirer on Saturday that the landfill will be constructed in Bonga village where the Solid Waste Dumpfill is located.
“We are clearing an area. As soon as we get the Environmental Compliance Certificate and other DENR clearances, we shall commence construction in about two to three weeks [from now],” he said.
Gonzalez said that the city may be able to finance the project with P40 to P50 million now that they were able to secure the technical assistance from BU and DENR-EMB.

Article continues after this advertisementHe said the city engineering and sanitary departments will provide technical assistance to ensure the strict compliance to the proper handling/disposal of Solid Waste in the City.
“There 18 landfills regionwide. Most of it are still being constructed, and only four are operational particularly in Legazpi, Masbate, Naga and Tabaco,” he added.
