NPA rebel eludes gov’t forces in Quezon

LUCENA CITY — A wanted New People’s Army (NPA) rebel eluded government forces sent to arrest him on Tuesday, Oct. 25, but left behind a grenade and bomb-making materials in Gumaca town in Quezon province.

The Gumaca police reported on Wednesday, Oct. 26, that police and Army soldiers, with a warrant, launched an operation around 10:30 a.m. to catch alleged NPA rebel Julius Lucaba in Barangay Villa Mendoza, where he was sighted resting on a coconut kiln.

However, the target was alerted of the approaching state security forces and escaped, said the report.

The guerrilla, facing kidnapping and illegal detention cases, left behind a hand grenade, two improvised explosive devices, bomb-making components, and personal belongings.

Police and soldiers conducted a hot pursuit operation.
