Magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits Abra, other parts of northern Luzon

BAGUIO CITY — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Boliney town in Abra province on Monday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

State seismologists recorded the earthquake at 5:06 p.m. and traced its epicenter some five kilometers northeast of Boliney.

The temblor was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 45 kilometers, Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs’ initial report on this earthquake showed the following Intensities and Instrumental Intensities in Abra and other provinces of northern Luzon:

Intensity IV – Banayoyo, Ilocos Sur
Intensity II – Baguio City, Benguet
Intensity I – Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte

Instrumental Intensity IV – Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
Instrumental Intensity III – Bangued, Abra
Instrumental Intensity II – Baguio City, Benguet; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Santiago City, Isabela
Instrumental Intensity I – Penablanca, Gonzaga, Cagayan; Laoag City, Nueva Era, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Damage and aftershocks from the quake can be expected, Philvolcs also said.
