Gesmundo: Christmas reminds us that judiciary must guard people鈥檚 rights

MANILA, Philippines — For Supreme Court Chief Justice (CJ) Alexander Gesmundo, Christmas serves as a reminder of the judiciary’s role of pursuing justice and protecting people’s rights.
Gesmundo said on Saturday that the spirit of Christmas entails hope, love, and peace. The CJ believes that Christmas should remind judges of their duties all year round.
“For us in the Judiciary, such work means pursuing justice enlightened by the virtues of love, charity, kindness, and peace. Thus, for us, Christmas serves not only as a celebration of the birth of Christ, but as a reminder of our role as guardian of the people’s rights,” he said in a Christmas message.
According to him, while there were challenges in 2022, Christmas still ushers a feeling of optimism, compassion, and mercy.
“We smile more, share more, help more, and forgive more. At least during this season, conflicts are ceased, problems are paused, fights are forgotten,” said Gesmundo.
Article continues after this advertisementDespite this “truce on negativity”, Gesmudo still said the judiciary should not lose sight of what is needed to “live out what Christmas truly means”.
“As we join the nation in celebration, may the goodwill and blessings of this season strengthen our commitment of truly working together for a joyful and peaceful future for all,” Gesmundo concluded.
