PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — Authorities on Tuesday arrested in Rizal town the two suspects in the New Year’s Day killing of a businessman in Quezon, Palawan province.

Joint operatives of Quezon town police, Palawan Police Provincial Office Investigation and Detection Management Unit (PIDMU), Provincial Intelligence Unit, and other police operating units in the province arrested Rowel Monserate at around 1 p.m. in Purok (zone) Masagana, Barangay (village) Bunog and his companion, who was not identified in the report.

Monserate is tagged as the primary suspect in the killing of Lou Cardiño.

Initial investigations identified jealousy as possible motive behind the killing after witnesses said Monserate was upset when he saw his live-in partner talking with Cardiño in their house in Rizal.

Recovered from Monserate’s possession were one a caliber .38 revolver with four live bullets, one case of discharged cartridge and other personal belongings.

The suspect is now under custody of Quezon police and will be brought to Palawan Provincial Forensic Unit (PALPFU) for paraffin test and drug test. The recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic examination for cross matching with the bullet recovered from the body of the victim.

Authorities are now preparing appropriate charges against the suspect who will be subjected to inquest proceedings. INQ
