Floods cost Oriental Mindoro P58-M losses in agriculture

Losses in agriculture in Oriental Mindoro province reached P58 million due to the floods triggered by days of rain last week, according to the report by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office issued on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

CITY OF CALAPAN – Losses in agriculture in Oriental Mindoro province reached P58 million due to the floods triggered by days of rain last week, according to the report by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office issued on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

The rains, brought by the northeast monsoon and low pressure area, affected Palawan, Mindoro and other areas of Luzon between Jan. 4 to 9.

Agricultural losses amounted to P57 million while damage on structure and equipment were placed at P1 million (affecting 41 farmers/fisherfolks), said the report.

The floods damaged rice fields; fruits, vegetables and corn farms; livestock and poultry.

Naujan town incurred the most losses at P37 million, followed by Baco town at P9.8 million and Calapan City at P2.7 million.

Continuous rains flooded all 26 villages, affecting 12,442 families, in Baco town.

In Naujan town, four houses were washed out — one in Apitong village and three in Del Pilar village.

A total of 311 families or 1,471 persons from the towns of Baco, Naujan and Victoria and Calapan City were reported to had been evacuated to 18 evacuation centers.
