Mayor Binay vows to focus on ‘innovative solutions’ in Makati

MANILA, Philippines —  Makati Mayor Abby Binay vowed to focus on good local governance that would tackle her city’s problems with “innovative solutions” — such as renewable energy, green technology, and electric transport.

Binay made her pronouncement on Tuesday in her seventh State of the City Address before the at Rockwell Club.

In her speech, she highlighted the city’s success in providing basic services to its citizens, such as improved access to healthcare and education.

One innovation on the way is the creation of a smart bus system. She said Makati had already signed an agreement with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in August 2022 that would implement the project.

Construction of the bus system will start sometime this year. It is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

Binay also promised to install solar panels in public schools and government offices to conserve energy and reduce their carbon footprint.

Apart from these, Binay also vowed to provide more scholarship grants and job opportunities and improve the quality of life of Makati residents.

To make the city government’s thrust to find innovative solutions, she asked for the support of the private sector in working with local communities

“I am confident that with our collective efforts and dedication, we can make this a reality. Together, let us continue to strive towards creating a sustainable world not just for Makati but for all,” she said.

In August last year, Makati declared a “climate emergency” amid a rise in sea levels and global temperatures.
